Amarok,Plasma,Strigi and /home on NFS

Dienstag, Dezember 18th, 2007

There is one thing, besides many others, which I technically like very much about the Unix/Linux approach of handling user accounts and network file systems. You can integrate systems transparently with each other… That’s what I did three years ago when I upgraded my dsl-dial-in-server to a file server, I put /home on nfs (v3 back then). Nfs<v4 has neither been the best friend of firewalls nor secured by encryption and even not by authentication. It is all up to the mounting client to give the right ids and therefore is easy to spoof.

Status of kdepimlibs/kblog

Dienstag, Dezember 18th, 2007

I’ve started to blog a bit myself recently. This showed some problems with Drupal and dateTime handling in KBlog, which I’ve thought would be a problem of Wordpress only/mainly. The problem is, which costed me quite some time and code diving in Wordpress and now Drupal code, that both only accept dateTime.iso8601 tags in the form of yyyyMMddThh:mm:ss. Why?

Testing KDE4 trunk…

Freitag, Dezember 7th, 2007

I finally got KDE4 working on my laptop. I’ve had to remove all build and installed folders and rebuild it, since there was a stupid crash in Plasma with me. Additionally I’ve had to search the “export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1″ to get KWin working correctly. This was especially confusing since it somehow has already worked without setting this env variable some weeks ago.
Why am I writing this post, there are plenty of better and more insightful posts around? It mostly boils down to the point that besides all issues mentioned here, KDE4 even now feels much better than KDE3. Why?

KBlogger in playground

Freitag, Dezember 7th, 2007

There was quite some hype, at least when compared to the situation before, around KBlogger recently, mostly since Aaron posted about it. Actually Antonio, which now does the most work on KBlogger told me he wants to wait with publication on the planet until KBlogger matures more, since there were the bugs mentioned by Aaron (and quite some more…).
